County Kilkenny is prosperous limestone farming country for most of its extent, but the north of the county has an industrial past that still shows on the register.

Anthracite was mined around Castlecomer from the seventeenth century until the closures of the twentieth, making the Leinster coalfield one of the longest-worked mining districts in the country. Generations of extraction left their mark on titles across that area: reservations of minerals to former owners or to the State, rights of entry granted for working and exploration, and arrangements concerning support or access created when shafts and adits were driven.

Those entries remain registered burdens whether or not anyone has acted on them for decades, and their practical reach depends on the wording of the instruments behind them rather than on the summary line in Part III. What the register does not record is the physical legacy — old workings, shafts and any settlement above them are not registrable interests, so a certified folio for coalfield ground is silent about what lies beneath it.

The rest of the county is farmed on limestone, in dairy and tillage holdings consolidated steadily as farms expanded, so a single folio commonly gathers parcels acquired from several neighbours at different dates and described by townland.
